'House Rules' for College Students
It may be the thing that dreams are made of - becoming a music producer, but not for three aspiring students at Kidderminster College: Joe Coghill (21), Pat Molloy (20) and Sian Griffin (20) have had their work signed by a record label and they are hoping to make a handsome return by the new year!
The HND in Urban and Electronic Music students, which is run at Kidderminster College in conjunction with the University of Worcester, are in their second year, and are hoping that this recent break will give them a much needed 'leg-up' in what is a highly competitive industry.
The students were offered the opportunity to remix a track by established Slovenian producers, EL Sam and Dave Droid.
Lecturer Paul Timothy masterminded the project. Having sought permission from the artists to remix their 'Joseph Come Home' track, he set the whole class the challenge and arranged for the best version to be released on Universe Media, an independent dance music label. Competition was stiff however and not one, but three, winning entries were decided upon: two House remixes and one Dub Step mix. It is anticipated that the tracks will be available to purchase by mid December, via digital music retailers iTunes Store and Beatport:
- EL Sam and Dave Droid, Joseph Come Home (Khemikal Remix by Joe Coghill)
- EL Sam and Dave Droid, Joseph Come Home (HRMX Remix by Pat Malloy)
- EL Sam and Dave Droid, Joseph Come Home (Fate Remix - by Sian Griffin)
"This particular course is highly practical in nature, with a strong emphasis on current music and studio production techniques, integrating technology and creativity, giving students every opportunity to explore their creativity by giving them real music industry opportunities and projects. Students also have the advantage of having access to current industry-standard resources, including music facilities for composition, recording, production, mixing, post-production and mastering using state of the art recording studios and music production suites, with Apple Mac computers, Logic Pro software and various hardware from Akai, Korg and Focusrite, together with the vast experience of music staff to guide and inspire the students".
They couldn't ask for a better opportunity for exposure to the music production world!" commented Paul Timothy.
This highly innovative course is ideal for those with an interest in electronic-based music, such as Hip Hop, House, Dub Step, Drum & Bass, R&B and Electronica, which is now a substantial part of the music industry.
